Birth Records
These records come from a variety of sources. Records from Belmont County Offices are so noted.
If you're not familiar with Ohio Birth Records, they were not required until 1867.
The birth was reported when someone was going to St. Clairsville From some areas of Belmont County, a trip to the county seat and the return trip home would take most of a day.
It was not always a family member who reported the birth. In many instances, it would have been a neighbor who was going into town for other business and was asked to report the birth while they were in town. That is why most births were reported months after the child's birth.
