Mildred L. Barnes

Mrs. Mildred L. Barnes, one of the older and highly esteemed residents of our town, passed away Wednesday night, following an illness of a few weeks due to infirmities and two nervous shocks coming so closely together, her son-in-law, Mr. Ray Depew dying Nov. 29, and her daughter, Mrs. A.O.C. Ahrendts, Jan. 9. The shock was too great for her condition and she took her bed in a few days after the daughter's death, and had gradually declined and weakened until the end.

Mrs. Barnes was born April 26, 1844, in Prince William county, Virginia, and was a daughter of Anna Lee and Jesse Griffin. When seven years of age, she came with her family to this community where she has since lived and was widely known.

She was twice married: the first time to Levin Fowler, and to this union two children were born and both survive her: Mr. George D. Fowler of South Broadway, and Miss Nettie Fowler in the home. Mr. Fowler preceded her in death many years. She was married the second time to Mr. Otho Barnes, also deceased, and two daughters blessed this union: Mrs. Ray Depew and Mrs. A.O.C. Ahrendts, the latter preceding her mother in death two weeks. Besides the two daughters, Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Depew, and the son, Mr. George Fowler, she leaves six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one step-son, Mr. Willard Barnes of Barnesville.

At the age of twelve years, Mrs. Barnes united with the Methodist church at Bethel, but upon moving to Barnesville, she transferred her membership to the First Methodist church. She was a worthy and zealous member during her life. She was one of the pioneers of Belmont county and it was a pleasure to converse with her on the history of our community and besides she kept up to date on all affairs of the present day. Her mind was clear and functioned better than many who were years younger. She was most hospitable and affable in her home and had many friends everywhere.

Funeral services will be held in the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by her pastor, Rev. S.E. LaFollette, and burial will be made in Crestview Memorial Park.
