Charles L. Simonson


BETHESDA — Charles L. Simonson, 83, of Soldiers, Sailors and Airman Retirement Home, Washington, D.C., formerly of Belmont, died Saturday (April 21, 2001) at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C.

He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Mt. Iron, Minn., son of the late Bert and Esther (Hoeffs) Simonson.

Mr. Simonson was a 1935 graduate of St. Clairsville High School and attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

He was a career U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in World War II and Vietnam. He also served in the Strategic Air Command and was a radar instructor.

After his military career he worked for the Hanna Coal Co. and later the Consolidated Coal Co. of Cadiz, where he retired after many years of service.

He was a member of Belmont American Legion Post 312, and a former member of the Lutheran Church in Bridgeport.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian (Hatcher) Simonson, in 1992; a brother, Morris B. Simonson; his step-mother, Adeline Duskey Simonson; a step-sister, Evelyn Davis; and a niece, Natalie Smith Russell.

He leaves a brother, Vernon Simonson of Cadiz; three sisters, Mrs. Vernon (Olive) Smith of Downers Grove, Ill., Mrs. James (Judith) Browning of Holland, and Mrs. M.C. (Camilla) Mussman of Radnor; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Cemetery, Bethesda. Full military graveside services will be conducted by Belmont County Council VFW.
