W. A. Talbott, Sr.
The Barnesville Whetstone gives the following account of the death of W. A. Talbott, Sr., a prominent citizen of that place, and the father of Mrs. J. C. Beckett, of this city: Just as we go to press the news of the death of Mr. W. A. Talbott, Sr. reaches us, which occurred at three o'clock this morning, at the home of his son, Mr. W. A. Talbott, Jr., who lives on North Chestnut Street, after nearly three years of gradual wearing away from the infirmities of old age. Mr. Talbott was born in Newtown, Va., in 1811, and came to Barnesville in 1832, where for six years he served as clerk in the dry goods store of Judge John Davenport.
On Oct 14, 1834 -- just sixty years tomorrow -- he married Miss Rebecca C. Davenport, daughter of Judge Davenport, and in 1838 moved to Batesville, where he formed a partnership in the dry goods business with his brother-in-law, Mr. John A. Davenport, which continued until 1845, when he came back to Barnesville and entered the firm of Davenport & Talbott, where he remained until 1854. At that time he began business for himself in the building now occupied and owned by J. W. Judkins, conducting a general dry goods business until about the year 1872. Mr. Talbott was a thorough dry goods merchant, having embarked in the business as clerk at Sheperdstown, Va., at the age of eighteen, and his experience with the trade continued without interruption from that time till 1872.
Mr. Talbott has been a member of the M.E. Church since 1830, during which time he has been a valuable official in its different departments, and during the days of his activity, was never found absent from his place. To Mr. and Mrs. Talbott were born 12 children, ten of whom, together with his aged wife, survive him. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Dr. W. H. Locke, and the remains of this christian gentleman will be laid to rest in Greenmount.
